If you use Microsoft Excel<\/a> frequently, you might have run into the error where you can\u2019t type anything into an Excel sheet. Luckily, this is a pretty common problem\u2014alongside other Excel responsiveness issues<\/a>\u2014and there are several ways to solve the issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re wondering, \u201cWhy can\u2019t I type in Excel?\u201d We’ve got six fixes to try. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Enable Editing\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve opened a spreadsheet that you didn\u2019t create \u2014 i.e., one that has been sent to you by somebody else or downloaded from the web \u2014 you may find it\u2019s protected. You\u2019ll know as when you open the file, you\u2019ll find you\u2019re unable to enter any text into cells. So how do you fix this issue?\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. When opening a protected spreadsheet, you\u2019ll see a yellow pop-up at the top of the spreadsheet that says, \u201cPROTECTED VIEW Be careful \u2014 files from the internet can contain viruses. Unless you need to edit, it\u2019s safer to stay in Protected View<\/span>.\u201d \n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Next to this, there\u2019s a gray button marked \u201cEnable Editing<\/span>.\u201d\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

    1. To enter text into a protected spreadsheet, just click Enable Editing<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. You should then find you\u2019re able to type in text and save the sheet with your changes.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      2. Unprotect Your Sheet or Workbook\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      It might be that the sheet or workbook you\u2019re trying to type in is protected. If this is the case, Excel won\u2019t let you type any data into the sheet and will display a message letting you know. It\u2019s easy to unprotect a sheet or workbook so you can enter data, although if the sheet or workbook is password protected, you\u2019ll need the password from whoever created it.\n<\/p>\n\n\n

      1. Click the Review <\/span>tab.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. If the sheet or workbook you\u2019re trying to type in is protected, you should see options to Unprotect Sheet<\/span> or Unprotect Workbook<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. To enter text into a protected sheet or workbook, just select Unprotect Sheet<\/span> or Unprotect Workbook<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      4. If the document is password protected, you\u2019ll see a pop-up prompting you for the password. Enter it, then click OK<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      5. You should now be able to enter text into the sheet or workbook and save your changes.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

        3. Disable NumLock\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        It might sound obvious, but are you trying to type numbers into an Excel sheet or workbook using the separate numeric keypad on the right side of your keyboard? If this is the case and you can\u2019t enter any numbers, it might be that NumLock is on. \n<\/p>\n\n\n

        Here\u2019s how to disable it.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Look for the NumLock key<\/span> on your keyboard. Some keys will have an LED that illuminates to show NumLock is on.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Press the NumLock key to turn NumLock off (or on).\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Note: <\/span>Many modern keyboards don\u2019t have a separate numeric keypad, therefore won\u2019t have a NumLock key.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          4. Clear Data Validation Rules\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          Data validation rules can restrict what values users can input \u2014 for example, you can provide a range of specified values, such as whole numbers from 0 to 100. If you try to type in any other value, this will result in an error message. \n<\/p>\n\n\n

          There are two options here: Either you can stick to the data validation restrictions or contact the sheet creator if you\u2019re not sure what input value is required. Or you can remove the data validation restrictions. Here\u2019s how to do that.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. Select the cells where the data validation restrictions are applied.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Click the Data <\/span>tab, then choose Data Validation<\/span> under Data Tools<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. Select Clear All<\/span>, then click OK<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          4. You should now be able to enter any value into cells.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

            5. Disable Add-Ins\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            If you\u2019ve recently installed new add-ins in Excel, this could be the reason you can\u2019t type in Excel. By launching Excel in safe mode, you can figure out if an add-in is causing this problem. Launching Excel in safe mode is also a good solution if Excel is not responding<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            How to launch Excel in Safe Mode\n<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

            Here\u2019s how to launch Excel in safe mode.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            1. Close your current Excel document \u2014 make sure to save any changes first.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            2. Press the Windows Key + R.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            3. In the Run box, type Excel\/safe<\/span> into the Open field.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            4. Click OK<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            5. Excel will launch in safe mode.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            6. Try typing into the sheet to see if the issue is fixed.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

              Still can\u2019t type in Excel? Now you know that an add-in is causing the problem, the only question is, how do you know which add-in is the culprit?\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Disabling add-ins\n<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

              First, you\u2019ll need to identify which add-in is the problem, then remove it. Here\u2019s how to do that.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              1. Open Excel and go to the File tab<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              2. Under Options<\/span>, select Add-Ins<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              3. At the bottom next to Manage <\/span>choose COM Add-Ins from the drop-down menu.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              4. Press Go<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              5. A list of installed add-ins should appear.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              6. Check the box for one add-in and leave the others unchecked. \n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              7. Select OK<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

                1. Restart Excel.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                2. Try typing into your sheet. If you\u2019re able to type, you know this add-in wasn\u2019t the problematic one.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                3. Repeat steps 1 through 9 to identify which add-in is causing the problem.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                4. Once you\u2019ve figured out which add-in is at fault, repeat steps 1 through 5 to bring up the list of installed add-ins, but this time check the box for the offending add-in, then click Remove <\/span>to uninstall it.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                5. Restart Excel and try typing \u2014 hopefully, you now shouldn\u2019t have any issues entering text.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                  6. Adjust Editing Options\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                  If a formula is applied to a cell, you can usually double-click that cell or press the F2 key to view the formula \u2014 and edit it. If you press F2 or double-click a cell and are unable to edit the formula or type in the cell, you need to adjust your editing options. Here\u2019s how to do that.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  1. Go to the File tab<\/span> and select Options<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  2. In the Excel Options<\/span> dialog box, select Advanced<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  3. Under Editing Options<\/span>, ensure the Allow Editing Directly in Cells<\/span> box is checked.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  4. Click OK<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  5. You should now be able to type into any cell to edit formulae.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n
