File Explorer is the easiest way to browse and organize files on Windows operating systems. It also has a useful File Grouping feature which lets you arrange files and folders by name, date, and more. However, this feature doesn\u2019t always work well, and some users prefer to disable it.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this tutorial, we\u2019ll explain how to turn off Grouping in Windows Explorer.\n<\/p>\n\n\n

How to Disable File Grouping in Windows 10\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you disable File Grouping, you\u2019ll prevent the Explorer file manager<\/a> from grouping your files according to their name, date, or file size. Typically, the only folder where this setting is automatically applied is the Downloads folder in which files are grouped by date modified. To do so:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Open File Explorer<\/span><\/a> by pressing the Windows key <\/span>+ E <\/span>or via the <\/span>Start Menu.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Navigate to the folder you want to disable File Grouping in.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Select the View Tab<\/span> <\/span>at the top of the window.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Select Group By<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. In the drop-down menu, choose None<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

    To turn off File Grouping in Windows 11:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Open File Explorer<\/span> and navigate to the folder you want to edit.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Select Sort <\/span>in the command bar at the top of the window.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Hover over Group by<\/span> and select (None) <\/span>from the drop-down menu.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

      It\u2019s possible to disable groups universally. First, disable File Grouping in a single folder as shown above. Then, follow the steps below for either Windows 10 or Windows 11 to apply the setting to all folders on your PC.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      On Windows 10\n<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

      1. Open a File Explorer <\/span>window and navigate to the folder where you\u2019ve already disabled File Grouping.\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Select the View tab<\/span> and select Options <\/span>then Change folder<\/span> and <\/span>search options<\/span>.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n

                  How to Enable File Grouping on Windows 10\/11\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                  To enable File Grouping, you simply need to repeat the steps above and select a different Grouping option.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  On Windows 10 or 11, open File Explorer<\/span> <\/span>and right-click an empty location. Select Group by<\/span>, then choose the type of grouping you want to apply. You can choose between Date modified<\/span>, Type<\/span>, Size<\/span>, and Name<\/span>. You can also select whether you want the files to group in an ascending or descending order.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  To enable File Grouping in all folders, navigate to File Explorer<\/span> <\/span>> Folder Options<\/span> and select Reset Folders<\/span>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n

                  Many users find the File Grouping feature frustrating and choose to turn it off. Luckily, Microsoft makes it easy to customize your folder view options and organize your files and subfolders exactly how you would like to. The problem is, occasional Windows updates (like the notorious Win 10 1903 version) can mess with your grouping settings and revert them to default.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
